The Committee
The Committee of the Catalan Association of NSW is composed of a group of volunteers that dedicate part of their time to organise the Casal’s events, and to push forward iniciatives that promote the Catalan culture, language and traditions in Australia. Any member of the Casal is welcome to be part of the Committee, which is currently formed by:
Marjorie Laburu · President
I was born in Toronto-Canada, during a big snow storm in November 1977 and, with only 3 years of age my family and I moved to Olot. I imagine I might have nomad blood because of my parents so that’s why we ended up moving to Sydney, of course, with a little help from my husband who received a job offer. I have two daughters, who I wanted to speak perfect English, one is from 2009 and the other from 2011. I am in charge of the sale of books and merchandising and I am also very attached to the Esplai for kids.

My name is Raquel Munoz Regne and I’m from Barcelona. I came here in 1997 with who’s now my husband. We met in London working together as gardeners and that’s what we do here in Sydney. We have two daughters, and I always wanted them to be part of this Casal family and for them to know as many Catalan traditions as possible. Australia has treated me well, it’s a nice country to live in with lots of opportunities, especially for my profession.
I run the Catalan classes and you can contact me at raquel.munoz@casalcatalansw.com
I’m Annie Zamora, I’ve lived in Gràcia (Barcelona) all my life. But one day we had the chance to come to work in Australia, and we didn’t think twice! So we came here with a 3 year old son and our 10 month old twins (yes, hands full). From the first moment I fell in love with this country, especially with the intensity of the blue of its sky, and that in any corner you can plant a mat and enjoy a picnic surrounded by a stunning landscape. Thanks to the Casal Català in NSW, I was able to feel a little less away from home, and in it you will find me as a reference for l’Esplai Infantil.

Esteve Mayolas Rocha · Grants
Born in Sant Pau d’Ordal, Esteve spent his youth between Vilafranca del Penedès and Barcelona, until at the age of 33 he moved to Sydney. It’s been over a decade, and Esteve admits he’s fallen in love with this charming city. As president of the Casal Català in NSW, Esteve says he is proud to be in charge of this new stage of the Casal, and to be able to contribute to the dissemination of our culture and language in Australia. You can contact him by writing to esteve.mayolas@casalcatalansw.com
Cesc Gomis · Coordination with Sydney Human Towers
I was born and grew up in Alcover (Tarragona) until I moved to Barcelona to study Industrial Engineering. There I met Marta, with who I fell in love, even though I often had her away because she was traveling a lot because of her work.
Together we had a boy and two girls, Sergi, Ainhoa and Elsa, who speak a perfect catasplanglish.
In 2012 we came up with the brilliant idea of coming to Australia to improve our pathetic English and to know another culture very different from ours. It wasn’t until two years later that we stepped on Sydney, which we loved from the very first moment.
I miss the family, our places and traditions, but thanks goodness I have the Casal Català and Sydney Human Towers that fill part of this gap.
